Mit dem Einspielergebnis von über 23 Mrd. US-Dollar repräsentiert das MCU die kommerziell erfolgreichste Filmreihe der Kinogeschichte. Bei mittlerweile 25 Titeln ist es aber auch nicht einfach, den Überblick zu behalten. Dies gilt insbesondere für Seiteneinsteiger. Wir klären Euch über die grundlegenden Zusammenhänge und vor allem die richtige Reihenfolge der Filme auf.
WAS IST DAS MCU?
Hierbei handelt es sich ums Gesamtwerk des vor über 80 Jahren gegründeten Comicverlags: In 300 Mio. Heften wurden knapp 6.000 Charaktere unterschiedlicher Rassen/Spezies etabliert, die den ewigen Kampf “Gut gegen Böse” auf zahlreichen Welten und Zeitebenen absolvieren.
Profitabel war das Geschäft aber lange Zeit nicht. So stand der Verlag in den 90ern kurz vorm Bankrott, während Fox (mit den X-Men) und Sony (Spiderman) mit Lizenzen Milliarden scheffelten. Der Präsident Kevin Feige hegte Expansionspläne und setzte sie 2005 mit der Gründung der Marvel-Studios in Gang. Ein 600-Mio-Kredit wurde aufgenommen, um 10 Filme vorzufinanzieren.
Die Konzentration galt zunächst den ursprünglichen Avengers, die zwei Event-Filme, aber auch reichlich Einzelauftritte erhielten. Auch um sich vom Comic-Business abzugrenzen, wurde schließlich der Begriff “Marvel Cinematic Universe” als Markenname für das Projekt gewählt.
WAS BEDEUTET MCU PHASE?
Die epische und facettenreiche “Infinity-Storyline” bot sich als passendes Kernthema an. Um das finanzielle Risiko zu begrenzen, splitteten die Kreativen die Saga in mehrere Abschnitte auf. Jede dieser Phasen repräsentiert eine in sich abgeschlossene Geschichte und wurde mit einem spezifischen Grundtenor versehen.
So dürft Ihr Euch in Phase 1 an Comedy-Elementen und Slapstikeinlagen erfreuen. Der Mittelteil der Infinitysaga hält kollektive und individuelle Wendepunkte für die Charaktere bereit. Zum Abschluss wirds stellenweise dystopisch. Die 2021 angelaufene vierte Phase stellt einen Neustart dar, in dessen Verlauf die dezimierten Avengers reformiert werden.
WIE VIELE MARVEL-FILME GIBT ES IM MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE?
Mit dem heutigen Stand (Oktober 2021) sind insgesamt 25 Filme auf der großen Leinwand erschienen. Bis Frühling 2023 dürft Ihr Euch noch auf 8 weitere Titel aus Phase vier freuen. Parallel dazu treibt Marvel die Figurenzeichnung in Serienform auf dem Streamingkanal des Mutterkonzerns Disney voran und plant dort auch Filme (u.a. ein für 2022 vorgesehenes Guardians-Weihnachts-Special).
IN WELCHER REIHENFOLGE SOLLTE MAN DIE MARVEL-FILME GUCKEN?
Das ist wohl eine Frage des persönlichen Geschmacks. Wenn Ihr die von der Kreativabteilung initiierten Twists in vollem Umfang erfassen wollt, solltet Ihr Euch an den Terminen der Kinostarts orientieren. Darin sind allerdings zahlreiche Zeitsprünge und Rückblenden inbegriffen.
So ist “Captain America: The First Avenger” als fünfter Film ins Kino gekommen, obwohl er im 2. Weltkrieg spielt und damit den eigentlichen Start der Infinitysaga darstellt. Comic-Puristen tendieren beim Rewatch daher dazu, die chronologische Reihenfolge der Filme einzuhalten. Auf diese Art könnt Ihr der Handlung einfacher folgen und Furys oftmals kryptische Andeutungen besser einstufen.
DIE REIHENFOLGE DER MARVEL-FILME NACH KINOSTART (ERSCHEINUNGSDATUM)
Beim ersten Durchgang ist es hingegen angebracht, die ursprüngliche Reihenfolge einzuhalten. Dazu müsst Ihr Euch jedoch Zeit nehmen, weil das MCU inzwischen rund 50 Stunden Filmmaterial umfasst. Die Effizienten unter Euch werden sich wohl mit den Avengers-Teilen begnügen. Ihr könnt Euch aber auch ruhigen Gewissens auf die Solofilme Eures Lieblingscharakters beschränken, da deren Geschichten keine exorbitanten Vorkenntnisse aus dem restlichen MCU erfordern (Ausnahme: Civil War).

MCU PHASE 1
In der ersten Phase erwarten Euch zumeist leichtfüßig erzählte Einzelabenteuer, in denen Euch die Fähigkeiten und Grenzen der Superhelden näher gebracht werden. Dazu lernt Ihr viel über die innere Struktur von S.H.I.E.L.D.
Die Geheimorganisation wurde in den 60ern vom UN-Rat als Gegenpart zu Hydra (Forschungsabteilung der Nazis) ins Leben gerufen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, übernatürliche Gefahren zu antizipieren und abzuwehren. Director Fury fährt hierbei zweigleisig und hält Ausschau nach “freien Mitarbeitern”, die er bei Bedarf rekrutieren kann. Der Fall tritt 2012 beim Angriff auf New York ein, für den sich die Chaotentruppe zum Team wandeln muss.

MCU PHASE 2
Die zweite Phase ist pessimistisch angelegt. Marvel lässt die Helden außerhalb ihrer Komfortzone agieren und destabilisiert S.H.I.E.L.D. Ohne die übergeordnete Instanz geraten die Avengers in “Age of Ultron” in einen Gewissenskonflikt, in dessen Verlauf sie sich entscheiden müssen, ob sie eine Millionenstadt opfern, um die Menschheit zu retten.
Das MCU wird mit Ant-Man und den Guardians erweitert. Vor allem die Weltraumpiraten heben sich durch einen autistischen Baum (“Groot”) und dem Proleten-Waschbär Rocket von der bedeutungsschweren Phase ab. Ihre Hauptaufgabe ist es zunächst, Euch den Background von Thanos näherzubringen.

MCU PHASE 3
Der Fehlschlag mit Ultron wirkt nach: Die UN schränkt die Handlungsfähigkeit begabter Personen empfindlich ein. Innerhalb der Avengers brechen sich daraufhin Egoismen Bahn und das Team zerbricht. Auf sich gestellt knüpfen sie Kontakte zu neuen Mitstreitern. Die größte aller Gefahren in Form des Titanen Thanos sehen sie indessen nicht kommen.
Der Mann mit dem Achtfach-Kinn beabsichtigt, das Problem der Überbevölkerung mittels apokalyptischem Völkermord zu lösen. Dies gelingt ihm in “Infinity-War” sogar. Doch kann Fury, den Tod vor Augen, noch seine Geheimwaffe aus dem Ärmel ziehen und damit das Rückspiel erzwingen.

Ende der “Infinity Saga”
MCU PHASE 4
Der Preis für den Sieg war hoch – Stark und Romanow sind tot, Rodgers hat sich in die 1970er zurückgezogen. Die vakanten Plätze gilt es nun neu zu besetzen, wobei Parker und Maximoff sicherlich als Topfavoriten ins Rennen gehen.
Es kann aber auch ganz anders ablaufen, da “Avengers 5” erst in der fünften Phase ins Kino kommen soll. Der vierte Part wird hingegen von den Guardians geheadlinet. Welche Auswirkungen damit einhergehen, ist noch ungewiss – Feige lässt sich ungern in die Karten schauen. Eines ist jedoch sicher: Langweilig wird es Euch im abwechslungsreichen MCU definitiv nicht werden.

WER GEHÖRT ALLES ZU DEN AVENGERS?
Die Filme unterscheiden sich von der Comicvorlage, in der Rodgers erst nach dem Sieg über Loki zum Team stößt. Doch spielt die Infinitysaga eigentlich in den 60ern und musste daher modernisiert werden.
So bilden Stark, Rodgers, Thor und Banner die Kerntruppe. Fury wählt sie persönlich aus und lässt sie lückenlos überwachen. Den S.H.I.E.L.D.-Agenten Barton und Romanow verbleibt nur der Praktikanten-Status. Die dem MCU später hinzugefügten Charaktere dienen im Wesentlichen als Kanonenfutter. Schließlich können nur Maximoff und Strange die Schlagkraft der Truppe nachhaltig erhöhen.
WANN KOMMEN DIE NÄCHSTEN MARVEL-FILME?
Die Corona-Pandemie hat Hollywoods Drehpläne gewaltig durcheinandergewirbelt. Auch Marvel ist etwa ein Jahr im Verzug und konnte erst im Sommer 2021 die vierte Phase einleiten. Bis zum Ende des Jahres erwarten Euch noch die außerirdischen Neuzugänge mit dem Titel “Eternals” und das dritte Spider-Man-Abenteuer.
Danach gehts mit Doctor Strange und dem lang erwarteten Machtwechsel in Asgard weiter. Die Ausrichtung der Fortsetzung von Black Panther wird in Fankreisen kontrovers diskutiert. Schließlich erwog Marvel nach dem tragischen Tod des Hauptdarstellers (Boseman verstarb 2020 an Darmkrebs) zwischenzeitlich, die Storyline fallen zu lassen.
